Local brewery/restaurant The Covey makes really good beer. Gold-medal-winning beer.
Now that the beers have gained some international fame, Covey brewmaster Jaime Fulton wants to bring a version of Oktoberfest, that world-famous festival of Beer and Volks, to the Fort. I often find myself disappointed by Americanized Oktoberfests, but I’ve heard good things about the food at the Covey, so I think I’ll give it a try. What’s the wurst that could happen?
The Covey’s Oktoberfest will be held at the restaurant (3010 South Hulen) Friday, September 12 from 3 p.m. to 10:30 p.m., and Saturday, September 13 from 11 a.m. to 10:30 p.m.
An $18 traditional Bavarian buffet will be featured, and 10% of the proceeds for the weekend will be donated to First Command Educational Foundation, an educational and financial literacy nonprofit.

It wasn’t long ago that I wrote about the Texas Ballet Theater’s recent financial woes, which have led the troupe to commence fundraising activities to stave off collapse. One of the decisions TBT made to cut costs for the upcoming 2008/2009 season was to use pre-recorded accompaniment music instead of the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra, which saves money for TBT but removes a long string of engagements for the FWSO.
Now, the local musicians’ union, the Dallas-Fort Worth Professional Musicians Association, has announced their intention to protest TBT performances during the upcoming season. Says the DFWPMA press release:
The company’s decision to go “canned” will affect seven weeks of Ballet in Fort Worth and one Nutcracker week in Dallas, and has evidently been planned for months, according to information obtained by Union President Ray Hair. “The Ballet company artistic staff traveled to China in June, 2008 and obtained a recording utilizing the staff orchestra of the National Ballet of China, which the company intends to use in place of the Fort Worth Orchestra for performances of Cleopatra at Bass Hall in March 2009,” said Hair. “By using recordings instead of professional musicians, the Texas Ballet Theater is cheating its patrons out of a legitimate ballet experience. Patrons’ tickets reflect the price of a live orchestra, and they should get what they’ve paid for. By outsourcing a live orchestra with Chinese-made recordings, Texas Ballet Theater is guilty of artistic fraud,” said Hair.
The union plans to protest with picket lines and leaflets at all TBT performances using pre-recorded music during the season. More on the saga of the ballet as it progresses.

As you may or may not know, local blogger filmmaker / blogger Anton Seim has taken his act to the Left Coast. Check out his blog, Deliberate Industries, and see how rough things really are in LA-LA land. Good luck, Anton. Don’t forget where you came from.

Below is from an email sent to West and Clear:
On Labor Day 2007, hundreds of people gathered under the Trinity Trees old growth canopy to speak out in favor of preserving one of the most pleasant, wondrously pristine and most frequently visited sites on Fort Worth’s landmark hike and bike trail.
Although the entire grove of trees was not saved, the efforts of concerned citizens resulted in convincing Chesapeake to reduce and relocate its pad site so that more than an acre of trees were saved.
Now, one year later, in another part of town, on another section of the Trail system, a similar scenario is playing out. This time, the Greenwood Grove is threatened with a high impact gas well. The new website www.protectthetrinitytrails.com includes photos and a map of the Greenwood site.
The Trinity Trails should be included in the definition of protected uses in the City of Fort Worth Gas Drilling Ordinance. But it is not. The City Council needs to make this change to the ordinance.
The Star-Telegram reports that a City Council vote for the drilling permit for the Greenwood site is scheduled for Tuesday, September 2.
The public spoke out a year ago and made a difference. It’s time to do it again.
Come to City Hall Tuesday at 7 p.m. to show your support for protecting the Greenwood Grove and the Trinity Trail system. A gas drilling moratorium rally is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. at City Hall prior to the start of the City Council meeting.

The Trinity Trails, one of the nicest pieces of green space in the whole city, has taken a few shots in the past year. First the Trinity Trees, then the Gas Drilling Task Force declining to recommend protected status for the trails. Local government doesn’t seem willing to protect this resource, so concerned citizens have decided to step in and form Protect the Trinity Trails in an attempt to preserve this resource. First item on the agenda — the proposed high impact well at the Greenwood Memorial Park Lease. The gas drilling permit came before council on August 5 and a continuance was granted until September 2.

Following hot on the heels of the Wall Street Journal, CNN and NPR, NBC is coming to town to check out this Barnett Shale thing. Word is that NBC Nightly News will be in town on Thursday to talk with Jerry Horton on Carter Avenue. Even though Ms. Horton agreed last week to give up the right-of-way for a pipeline after realizing that there was no legal way to keep a natural gas pipeline company from building its gathering line beneath her home, this incident is just another example that Fort Worth can offer the rest of the country about gas drilling — how not to conduct gas drilling in an urban area.

The City of Fort Worth Parks Board will discuss the master plan for Tandy Hills Natural Area at their meeting at 4 p.m. this afternoon at the Botanic Gardens Conservatory. This is an important step in the process of protecting and restoring our irreplaceable resource. The board will be receiving the results of the environmental survey and staff recommendations.
The Advisory Board agenda also includes an action item which asks the board to endorse a recommendation for conversion of parkland for a gas pipeline and an above ground valve station in Marion Samson Park. Marion Samson Park, particularly Inspiration Point, is listed on Historic Fort Worth’s 2008 most endangered places list.
